RiverDogs’ Resilient Season Sets Stage for Postseason Run
CHARLESTON, S.C. — A season defined by resilience, dramatic comebacks and a historic turnaround has brought the Charleston RiverDogs to the doorstep of another championship. After overcoming a five-game deficit in the South Division standings to capture the first-half title and finish with 73 victories, their most in four seasons, the RiverDogs now turn the page to the postseason, opening the Carolina League South Division Series Tuesday against the Hickory Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium.
After finishing the 2026 regular season with a 73-59 record, including a 37-29 mark in the first half and a 36-30 record in the second half, Charleston secured its first playoff berth since 2024 and its fifth postseason appearance in the last six seasons since rejoining the Tampa Bay Rays organization in 2021. The 73 victories marked the most for the franchise since 2022.
The RiverDogs will open the best-of-three Carolina League South Division Series on Tuesday, September 8, against the Hickory Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina. Charleston captured the South Division First Half title, guaranteeing the RiverDogs home-field advantage for Game 2 on Thursday, September 10, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park at 7:05 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will also be played at The Joe on Friday, September 11, at 7:05 p.m.
The series marks the first postseason meeting between Charleston and Hickory. The two clubs met 12 times during the regular season, with the Crawdads winning the season series 7-5. The teams have not met since June.
Charleston is seeking its first Carolina League championship since 2023, when the RiverDogs captured their third consecutive league title.
The road to the postseason featured one of the most dramatic stretches in recent RiverDogs history. After opening the year 14-10 in April, Charleston went 12-15 in May before putting together a remarkable turnaround in June. On May 30, the RiverDogs trailed Hickory by five games in the South Division standings. From that point forward, Charleston went 13-2 while Hickory went 5-10, allowing the RiverDogs to erase the deficit and claim the first-half title.
The turnaround was highlighted by a 12-game winning streak, the longest in franchise history since at least 2005. Despite navigating injuries throughout the run, Charleston consistently found ways to rally, establishing a flair for the dramatic along the way. Reinforcements such as first basemen Brady Marget, outfielder Tom Poole and pitcher Blake Morgan, among others, fueled the club’s success in the heart of the summer.
The RiverDogs recorded 14 walk-off victories, currently the most across any level of the sport including the Majors. Charleston also finished tied for third across Single-A with 14 wins when trailing after the seventh inning or later, one of just five clubs in the classification to reach that mark. The RiverDogs' eight victories while trailing in the ninth inning or later are the most across Single-A and are tied for the most at any level of Minor League Baseball.
Charleston's success was fueled by one of the most well-rounded clubs in the Carolina League. The RiverDogs finished the season hitting .252 as a team, the best mark in the league, while striking out fewer times than any other club across the Single-A level. On the mound, Charleston's 4.29 team ERA ranked third in the Carolina League, while its 1.41 WHIP ranked fourth.
The RiverDogs also enter the postseason with six prospects ranked among the Tampa Bay Rays' top 30 by MLB Pipeline. 2026 first-round pick Grady Emerson leads the group at No. 1, followed by infielder Cooper Flemming at No. 5, infielder Taitn Gray at No. 6, outfielder Slater de Brun at No. 14, Andreimi Antunez at No. 19 and infielder/outfielder Dean Moss at No. 30. Emerson and Flemming also appear on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospect list, ranking No. 10 and No. 83, respectively.
At just 20 years old, Flemming authored one of the Carolina League's most productive offensive seasons. He finished second among qualified hitters with a .298 batting average and led the league with 79 RBI and 29 doubles. His 133 hits ranked second, while his 43 extra-base hits also placed second.
Gray was equally impressive in his first full season with the RiverDogs, finishing with a .296/.389/.462 slash line, eight home runs and 52 RBI in 76 games. Since returning from his rehab stint on July 29, the switch-hitter has batted .311 with 22 RBI.
On the mound, Aidan Cremarosa authored one of the most memorable individual performances of the season when he threw a complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter at the Augusta GreenJackets on May 8. Cremarosa struck out 11 batters and faced just one over the minimum after an eighth-inning walk ended his bid for a perfect game.
The outing marked the first RiverDogs no-hitter since August 6, 2018, when Janson Junk, Austin DeCarr and Daniel Álvarez combined to no-hit Delmarva while the organization was affiliated with the New York Yankees. Cremarosa became the first RiverDogs pitcher in more than two decades to throw a solo no-hitter and the first player in franchise history to complete nine innings in a game since at least 2005.
First-year manager Danny Mendick guided Charleston through the dramatic turnaround and into the postseason in his debut season at the helm.
"It's an unbelievable group," said Mendick. "It was absolutely incredible. I mean these guys fought from the dead and just continued to go. I couldn't be more proud."
The RiverDogs' playoff run is presented by Nucor Steel Berkeley, who will help bring a sizzling playoff atmosphere to The Joe when Charleston takes the field in September. Single-game postseason tickets are on sale now.
Game 2 on Thursday, September 10, will feature another Thirsty Thursday at The Joe, with $1 beers and discounted drinks presented by Budweiser, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The ballpark will also turn gold as Charleston rallies behind the RiverDogs' pursuit of another championship. The first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a gold T-shirt, thanks to Nucor Steel, Allegiance Flag Supply and Gildan.
Should Charleston advance, the Carolina League Championship Series will begin Sunday, September 13, with the RiverDogs hosting Game 1. Games 2 and 3, if necessary, would be played at the North Division champion's ballpark on September 15 and 16.
The RiverDogs now turn their attention to Hickory, with a championship once again within reach.
