Bowie, MD (August 19, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, dropped a back-and-forth contest to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in a 7-4 final Wednesday.
In a game featuring three ties and four lead changes, Chesapeake (26-20, 55-59) earned a eighth inning tie with a Fernando Pegeuro two-run single, but Richmond responded with a go-ahead, three-run ninth. A Gavin Kilen RBI double gave the Flying Squirrels a lead before Sabin Ceballos hit his second home run a batter later.
Left-handed starter Joseph Dzierwa, the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, pitched five one-run innings in a no-decision for the Baysox. The Orioles' No. 4 prospect and No. 96 overall prospect via MLB.com gave up just two hits and a walk to three strikeouts.
Across his last five starts, Dzierwa has pitched to a 1-0 record and 0.68 ERA (two earned runs across 26.2 innings), giving up 12 hits and five walks to 27 strikeouts during the span.
The Baysox took an opening 1-0 lead in the second inning after back-to-back doubles. Tavian Josenberger roped a two-bagger to left center field before Vance Honeycutt scored him on a RBI hit to left field.
In his first two Double-A games, Honeycutt has a pair of RBI hits and a walk with two stolen bases.
Richmond tied the game at one in the fourth on a Ceballos leadoff home run to left field. The homer snapped Dzierwa's streak of 22 consecutive innings without conceding an earned run.
Right-hander Gerald Ogando relieved Dzierwa in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings. Ogando also earned five strikeouts, a career-best across five full-season affiliated campaigns.
In the home half of the sixth, Chesapeake reclaimed a lead, 2-1, when four consecutive batters reached safely. After a Victor Figueroa single and both Anderson De Los Santos and Thomas Sosa walked to load the bases, Griff O'Ferrall scored Figueroa on a bunt RBI single down the third base line.
Flying Squirrels right-handed starter Trystan Vrieling gave up the O'Ferrall RBI single and pitched to a quality start with six, two-run innings of a no-decision. Vrieling earned a strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the sixth.
While ahead, Chesapeake loaded the bases again in the seventh, but an inning-ending double play ended the Baysox threat.
Ogando was relieved by right-hander Tyson Neighbors in the eighth when Richmond scored three runs. Trevor Cohen led the inning off with a double and then tied the game at two on a Dayson Croes RBI single.
A Flying Squirrels single and walk then loaded the bases and led to Neighbors being relieved by right-hander Jeisson Cabrera. On an ensuing fielder's choice, shortstop Wehiwa Aloy made a great play by throwing the lead runner out at home to keep the score tied at two. Charlie Szykowny then hit a two-run single to right field for a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth, Chesapeake tied the game at four with a two-out rally. Following a pair of strikeouts, Josenberger and Honeycutt both walked and then scored on Peguero's third hit, a two-run single to right center field.
Peguero finished 3-for-4, his first three-hit game across 51 Double-A contests.
Richmond took a final, 7-4 lead in the ninth when it scored three runs in a two-batter span. Against right-hander Alex Pham (L, 0-2), Kilen (4-for-5) hit a RBI double to go up 5-4 before Ceballos scored him on a two-run homer to left center field.
After pitching the final out of the eighth, Richmond right-hander Tyler Vogel (W, 8-2) came back out to retire Chesapeake in the bottom of the ninth.
The Baysox host their third of six games this week against the Flying Squirrels Thursday. Chesapeake will start right-hander Anthony Eyanson (6-0, 2.01 ERA) to oppose right-hander Yunior Marte (1-4, 4.32 ERA). First pitch Thursday is set for 6:35 pm from Prince George’s Stadium.
