Altoona, PA (July 30, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, fell to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, by a 14-10 final on Thursday night.
Chesapeake (17-12, 46-51) nearly overcame a 9-2 deficit on Thursday. Brandon Butterworth continued his stellar stretch at the plate with a career evening. Butterworth belted three extra-base hits and tallied a career-high five RBI. His three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning punctuated a five-run frame for the Baysox, making the game 11-10 in favor of Altoona.
The early deficit came from an eight-run bottom of the second inning for Altoona against left-handed starter Sebastian Gongora. After a first inning solo homer from the Curve’s Lonnie White Jr, Altoona sent 11 men to the plate and scored eight runs on five hits. A couple singles and a throwing error loaded the bases with no one out. After an out was recorded at home plate on a grounder, another ground out brought a run home. With two outs, a hit by pitch loaded the bases before a pair of two-run singles from Jesus Castillo and Carmichael brought home four more. Two batters later, a Titus Dimitru three-run homer led to Gongora (L, 8-6)’s exit following an inning and two-thirds. Due to the error earlier in the frame, only one of the runs allowed by Gongora came across as earned.
Two early Baysox tallies came in the top of the second on a Victor Figueroa RBI triple and a Willy Vasquez sacrifice fly. Chesapeake continued to chip away at the seven-run hole against Altoona right-handed starter Peyton Stumbo. Butterworth’s first of two RBI doubles came in the third, where he also scored on a Frederick Bencosme groundout. Butterworth doubled home another run in the fifth – the last run allowed by Stumbo (W, 2-9), who completed six innings for the Curve on Thursday.
Butterworth has hits in 13 of his last 14 games for the Baysox. He’s hitting .375 (21-for-56) with 14 RBI in that span.
The Curve hit a pair of solo homers in the bottom of the fifth to lengthen the lead to 11-5. That score held until the eighth, when the Baysox brought runs home on a bases loaded walk earned by Doug Hodo and am Aron Estrada fielder’s choice to set the stage for the Butterworth homer.
Griff O’Ferrall notched a double and single on Thursday for his fourth-consecutive multi-hit game – extending his overall hitting streak to seven games. Anderson De Los Santos also singled in the first to extend his on-base streak to 16 games.
Altoona’s three-run eighth began on the back of a Chesapeake error – one of seven combined errors between the two teams on Thursday.
Chesapeake looks to get back in the win column when it continues its six-game series in Altoona on Friday night. Left-hander Joseph Dzierwa (2-1, 2.48 ERA) is set start for the Baysox against Curve right-hander Matt Ager (4-2, 5.04 ERA). First pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm ET from Peoples Natural Gas Field.
The Baysox return home on Tuesday, August 4, when they open up a seven-game set with the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:35 pm ET.
