Bowie, MD (May 22, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles fell to the Somerset Patriots, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, in a 8-2 loss Friday.
Chesapeake (17-25) got a stellar start out of the gate from left-hander Joseph Dzierwa in his Double-A debut. Dzierwa did not allow a hit through the first four and two-thirds innings, while setting a career-high with 10 strikeouts – all coming in his first five frames on the mound.
At the plate, Chesapeake provided an early lead in the top of the third, when Thomas Sosa scored Maikol Hernandez on a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0.The Baysox then doubled their lead an inning later off the bat of Aron Estrada. Estrada led off the fourth inning by rocketing a solo home run for his second long ball of the series.
The blast continues what has been a great May for Estrada, the Orioles’ No. 7 prospect. A day after Estrada snapped an eight-game hitting streak, the longest by a Baysox batter this season, Estrada used the homer to bring his May average to .333 (20-for-60) with two home runs and six RBI.
The Chesapeake lead lasted until the sixth inning when Somerset got to the Baysox for a 5-2 advantage. After an error started the inning, the Patriots worked seven hits, including four consecutive RBI singles to bat around in the frame that chased Dzierwa (L, 0-1), with four runs (three earned) charged to his final tab in five and one-third innings.
Somerset’s Tyler Hardman added an eighth inning solo home run and Garrett Martin tacked on a two-run double in the ninth to provide the Patriots with insurance. The Baysox bats were held in check by the Patriots bullpen on Friday. Three Somerset relievers combined to allow just one hit and no runs, including two and a third scoreless from left-hander Will Brian (W, 1-1).
Chesapeake hosts the penultimate game against Somerset Saturday night. A pair of left-handers are scheduled to pitch with the Baysox starting Sebastian Gongora and the Patriots countering with Kyle Carr. First pitch from Prince George’s Stadium is set for 6:35 pm.
