Richmond, VA (September 13, 2026) – The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, 3-1, in Sunday afternoon’s season finale, on the back of a late Wehiwa Aloy homer and one last gem from the pitching staff.
Chesapeake (38-29, 67-68) trailed 1-0 entering the eighth inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the seventh, the Baysox began the eighth with a Griff O’Ferrall single and a Frederick Bencosme walk. After consecutive strikeouts by Flying Squirrels southpaw Dale Stanovich (L, 3-4), Aloy broke through with a go-ahead, three-run shot to left field. It was Aloy’s tenth Double-A home run in 39 games with the Baysox. His 25 home runs this season between High-A and Double-A are second-most among all Orioles minor leaguers.
The Baysox wrapped up the season with an appropriate and dominant pitching performance. Despite allowing a first inning run on a Sabin Ceballos single, right-hander Pat Reilly turned another great start. Coming off a career-high seven innings last weekend against Portland, Reilly logged five and two-thirds of one-run ball with seven strikeouts on Sunday. He scattered six hits and issued no walks. Reilly’s last six starts with the Baysox this season saw him post a 2.08 ERA, allowing just seven earned runs in 30 and one-third innings with 41 strikeouts. Reilly did not allow more than two runs in a start in that span.
Right-hander Richard Guasch recorded the final out of the sixth on a single pitch. In the seventh, righty Keagan Gillies (W, 1-0) was clutch. He stranded a pair of two out singles with one of two strikeouts in his lone inning of work. Right-hander Alex Pham worked a perfect bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, right-hander Brock Moore (S, 2) allowed a one-out single, but ended the game by generating a grounder to the shortstop O’Ferrall, who started a six-four-three double play with second baseman Aron Estrada to end the game.
The Baysox pitching staff finished the season with a 3.36 ERA in its final 70 games, going 41-29 as a team over that stretch. The staff led Minor League Baseball in staff ERA over that stretch, dating back to June 19. Chesapeake’s rotation posted a Double-A-best 2.61 ERA in its last 40 games, dating back to July 29.
O’Ferrall and Estrada were two of three Baysox hitters to record two hits on Sunday, along with Aloy. O’Ferrall finished the series 10-for-20 at the plate and hit .410 over his last 11 games of the Double-A season.
Estrada finished 2026 as the Baysox leader in hits (130), home runs (24), and RBI (76).
Chesapeake won four of five games this week in Richmond to close out 2026. The Baysox finished the second half with 22 road wins – more than any Eastern League team and second-most of any Double-A team since the records reset on June 22.
