CLEARWATER, FL – Phillies second-round pick Caden Bogenpohl blasted a go-ahead two-run home run in his first home game for the Clearwater Threshers (61-40, 21-14) to put his new team ahead for good in a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Tarpons (59-43, 24-12) on Tuesday night at BayCare Ballpark. The Threshers look for their tenth win against the Tarpons when they return home for a Wednesday night rematch.
After a two-out walk by Will Gasparino in the bottom of the first inning, Bogenpohl worked the count full and hit a two-out two-run home run to start the scoring. Brayden Bakes took a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall to lead off the third inning and make it 3-0 Threshers. Tampa picked up their first run of the game following a leadoff triple and an RBI groundout in the fifth, cutting the deficit to two runs.
Tampa added another run in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the Threshers’ advantage to one run. Will Vierling took a run back for the Threshers with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth that brought the lead back to two runs. Bogenpohl walked with one out and advanced to second and third on a walk and a fielder’s choice. With two outs in the inning, a wild pitch sailed over the catcher, plating Bogenpohl to bring the Threshers’ lead back to three runs after seven innings. The Tarpons were able to add baserunners in the final two frames, but Clearwater’s bullpen shut the door and sealed a 5-2 victory.
Cole Gilley (6-1) surrendered one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Kevin Warunek allowed one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 1.0 inning of relief. MT Morrissey struck out one of the three batters he faced in 1.0 scoreless and hitless inning. James Tallon (1) picked up the save in the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
