Several former Threshers took spots on Baseball America's "Best Tools" list that was released at the end of August. The 2026 Threshers led the Florida State League in players whom the popular subscription site deemed to have the best tools in Single-A over the past season, and several Threshers alumni made the same lists at higher levels of the minor leagues. Multiple 2026 Threshers were ranked the best in seven different categories in the Florida State League, as well as multiple other categories in Double-A. It all starts at the top in baseball, and that has certainly been the case for the Threshers this season, as Baseball America named Aaron Barrett the best Low-A manager. Barrett led the Threshers to a top-two record in the Florida State League in 2026, becoming the only FSL team to finish the first half with 40 or more wins. After his first two months as a manager, Aaron Barrett had clinched the Threshers' third first-half championship in the last four seasons. Under his guidance, the Threshers will finish multiple games above .500 on both the road and at BayCare Ballpark in 2026.
Few players were mentioned in Baseball America's Best Tools List more than Juan Villavicencio. The utility infielder played shortstop, second base, and third base in 70 games for the Threshers this season, belting 13 home runs and driving in 39 runs before earning a promotion to High-A Jersey Shore. He left Clearwater among the Threshers and Florida State League leaders in nearly every batting category and earned the title of Best Batting Prospect from Baseball America. His excellent glove also earned Villavicencio the Best Defensive Shortstop, Best Infield Arm, and Most Exciting Player.
The beginning of the 2026 season was highlighted by the pitching prowess of 2025 Phillies First-Round Draft Pick Gage Wood. While he began the season in Clearwater, he was quickly called up to Double-A Reading in May after earning Pitcher of the Month Honors within the Phillies' Farm System. Since his promotion, Wood has made 15 starts for the Fightin Phils and struck out 84 batters in just under 60 Double-A innings. His strikeout stuff is highlighted by his high-90s fastball, named the best heater in the Eastern League by Baseball America. Two more former Threshers who began the season in Double-A Reading also earned superlatives from Baseball America, as 2023 Thresher Alex McFarlane, now a member of the Phillies' bullpen, earned Best Reliever in the Eastern League while Bryan Rincon had the best strike zone judgment in the Eastern League in 2026
The latest pick signed by the Phillies in 2025 began the season with Gage Wood on the Threshers: 19th-round pick Robert Phelps. The infielder was drafted out of NAIA Reinhardt and was commonly the leadoff man at the start of the season for the Clearwater Threshers, boasting a .400 on-base percentage in the top five of the FSL upon his call-up to Jersey Shore in early August. Baseball America named Phelps the best defensive second baseman in Single-A, forming an elite duo with the best defensive shortstop, Villavicencio. Phelps and Villavicencio were big reasons why the Threshers lead the Florida State League in fielding percentage and have turned the most double plays in the FSL in 2026.
Three Threshers Alumni who are no longer with the Phillies organization earned some accolades on the Best Tools list, and all three of those ballplayers played for the Threshers in 2026. John Spikerman, who was traded to the Mets after a rehab assignment with the Threshers in July, had the best strike zone judgment in the South Atlantic League, as he spent most of his 2026 season with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in High-A. Ramón Márquez, who rose to the Phillies' number four prospect following his debut with the Threshers, had the best changeup in Single-A, and Marty Gair, a Thresher for the last two seasons, was awarded best reliever. Both were dealt in the trade that netted Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.
