CLEARWATER, FL – Macon Winslow belted his first career home run as the Clearwater Threshers (63-43, 23-17) scored five runs in the final four innings but fell 10-5 to the Tampa Tarpons (62-45, 27-14) on Sunday afternoon at BayCare Ballpark. The Threshers will travel to Fort Myers for a six-game series after taking Monday off.
After the first inning came and went without a run, Tarpons’ first baseman Tyce Armstrong led off the second inning with a home run, and Tampa scored three in the top half of the frame. A two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning padded their lead to five runs. Tampa added four more RBI singles with two outs in the fourth to bump their lead to ten.
The Threshers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, beginning with a one-out double by Matthew Ferrara. He scored on a single by Matt Quintanar to give Clearwater their first run of the game. Will Gasparino and Caden Bogenpohl each recorded two-out singles in the sixth inning before Macon Winslow belted a three-run home run over the left field wall to cut the deficit to six runs.
The rally continued into the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single by Nolan Beltran. Two wild pitches from Tarpons reliever Greysen Carter advanced him from first to third before scoring on an RBI groundout by Brady Day cut Tampa’s lead to five runs. However, the Threshers were retired in order in the final 2.0 innings, sealing a series split in a 10-5 loss to Tampa.
Zuher Yousuf (3-2) surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in 2.0 innings to take the loss. Peyton Havard allowed seven runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Giussepe Velásquez shut out the Tarpons for 2.1 innings with three hits and one walk allowed along with three strikeouts. Wilmer Blanco struck out two batters with two walks allowed and one hit in 2.0 shutout frames. Tyler Bowen struck out one batter in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
