COLUMBIA, S.C. — Jesus Oliveira led the way as the Fireflies bullpen tallied 4.1 one-hit innings to close out Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets at Segra Park. The righty went two hitlesss innings with three strikeouts. Michael Braswell started the streak with four outs to only one hit and Moises Amezquita closed out the game with a scoreless ninth for the Fireflies pen.
Offensively, Josh Hammond went 1-4 to move a step closer to Ronnie Mauricio. He is two hits shy of tying Mauricio for the single-season hits record in Fireflies franchise history. Mauricio tallied 126 hits in 2019 and Hammond has 124 hits in his first 106 games of the 2026 season.
Play-by-Play
Augusta cracked the score column in the top of the first inning. Parker Brosius reached on a throwing error from Josh Hammond with one out. After that, Darwin Rodriguez walked Juan Mateo to set the table. The two executed a successful double steal and then Caleb Klein sliced a single through to score the pair and push the GreenJackets to a 2-0 lead.
The GreenJackets increased their lead in the fifth. Manuel Campos lined a lead-off single up the middle before stealing second and third. After that, Caden Merritt slapped a single down the third baseline to plate Campos and make it a 3-0 ball game.
After a 30 pitch first inning, Darwin Rodriguez spun 4.2 innings and allowed three runs, just one earned while tallying five strikeouts for the Fireflies.
Michael Braswell was the first reliever on for Columbia. The righty spun 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout and no walks to get the ball to Jesus Oliveira. Oliveira worked two hitless innings with three strikeouts before Moises Amezquita closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Columbia got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. JC Vanek kicked off the inning with a flare single and moved up to third on a Sean Gamble two-bagger to set the table. Jhosmmel Zue grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Vanek to come home to cut the GreenJackets lead to 3-1.
Brody Fowler (W, 1-1) spun six innings and allowed seven hits, but he scattered them to only allow the one run for Columbia. After that, Logan Forsythe tallied a pair of scoreless innings and Lewis Sifontes (S, 7) closed out the ninth for Augusta.
On-Deck
The Fireflies open up a series with the Charleston RiverDogs Tuesday night at Segra Park at 7:05 pm. Both teams have yet to name their starters for the series.
