The Columbus Clingstones (35-33, 64-68) finished their second season by managing little on offense in a 4-1 loss to Montgomery Biscuits (71-66, 36-32) on Sunday afternoon at DABOS Park. Montgomery won the series 3-2.
Decisive Plays: Montgomery took a quick 2-0 lead after a sacrifice fly from Theo Gillen in the first inning and a solo home run from Mac Horvath in the second inning. Columbus did not record a hit until the fourth inning, when John Gil led off with a single. A solo home run from Brock Jones gave the Biscuits a 3-0 lead in the seventh inning. Columbus would break up the Biscuits' shutout effort after Dalton McIntyre scored on a throwing error from shortstop Gregory Barrios in the ninth inning.
Key Contributors: Davis Polo (6.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) was not as sharp as his brilliant Tuesday performance but still managed a quality start while Gil (1-for-4) had the only hit for Columbus. For Montgomery, Horvath (3-for-3, HR, RBI) had the best offensive performance while Garrett Edwards (W, 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO) shut Columbus down out of the bullpen.
Notable: Columbus finished the season with 132 games played, six games shy of the originally scheduled 138-game season. Since June 1, Columbus starting pitchers posted a 3.20 ERA, the best in baseball (MLB & MiLB) over that span. The Clingstones set a new Atlanta Braves Double-A record for home runs with 151 in 132 games. Columbus falls to 0-2 in season finale games and has yet to win on Opening Day or the final game of the season in franchise history.
