Six-Run Comeback from Biloxi Upends Promising Night for Columbus

Columbus collapses in the ninth, falls 11-9 to Shuckers in 10 innings.

A 9-3 lead in the ninth vanished for the Columbus Clingstones (16-18, 45-53) in a flash as the Biloxi Shuckers (20-14, 55-44) stormed back for eight unanswered runs and handed Columbus another deflating loss on Tuesday night at Synovus Park. 

Decisive Plays: Columbus went down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but responded quickly with a three-run frame, including an RBI single from Owen Carey. A two-run homer from Mark Coley II tied the game at 3-3 in the second. A sacrifice fly from Carson Taylor pushed Columbus back in front in the fifth inning. Columbus then erupted for five runs in the seventh, including a mammoth two-run home run from Taylor (3) to lead 9-3.

Entering the ninth with that score still intact, the Shuckers sent nine to the plate and score six times; the crushing blow delivered on a two-out three-run home run from Coley II to tie the game at 9-9. In the 10th inning, Marco Dinges powered a two-run home run to put Biloxi ahead 11-9. Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. came into pitch, and stranded the bases loaded to give Columbus a fighting chance. Columbus got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th, but John Gil struck out to end the game.

Key Contributors: Taylor (1-for-2, 2 BB, HR, 3 RBI) and Jordan Groshans (1-for-5, 2 RBI) drove in multiple runs while Carey (1-for-4, HR, RBI) and Eric Hartman (1-for-5) collected their first career Double-A hits. For Biloxi, Coley II (2-for-5, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Dinges (1-for-6, HR, 2 RBI) had the game-changing home runs while Blake Burke (4-for-6, 2B) had a game-high four hits.

Notable: Columbus and Biloxi combined for 20 runs, the highest total in a game between the two clubs all-time. Columbus lost its third extra-inning game in its past four games. Taylor extended his on-base streak to 10 games.
