COLUMBUS, OH - The sun came out Thursday afternoon as the Clippers fell to the St. Paul Saints, 10-2, in a game that was initially suspended in the bottom of the 3rd inning on Wednesday night.
The Saints owned a modest 2-0 lead when rain forced the game to be paused. St. Paul hurler Trent Baker took the hill when action resumed Thursday and instantly found himself in a pickle. Two Clippers reached by walk immediately before the rain, and Daniel Schneemann was at-bat with a 2-0 count. Schneemann walked as well, but Columbus couldn't cash in the bases loaded opportunity.
An inning later, Baker served up a 93-mph fastball to Ralphy Velazquez that looked as inviting as a tasty dessert sitting on a display tray. Ralphy deposited the pitch 418 feet away in the trees beyond the center field wall to put the Clippers on the scoreboard.
Kyle Manzardo went deep in the 6th inning, a solo shot that was his fourth home run since joining the Clippers.
Two runs weren't nearly enough in this one for the Clippers. Right-hander Trenton Denholm (9-5) took the loss, having allowed two runs over 3.0 innings Wednesday night before Mother Nature cut short his opportunity at becoming a 10-game winner.
The loss gives Columbus an overall record this season of 64-55, while St. Paul improves to 70-51. The two teams were set to follow with a 7-inning contest Thursday.
