FRISCO - Walker Janek hit two home runs and Chase Call belted a grand slam as the Hooks marched to their largest victory of the year, a 16-4 triumph over Frisco on Thursday night at Riders Field.
Corpus Christi, carving out seven two-out runs in the sixth, recorded 17 hits for a second consecutive night, two hits shy of the club's single-game standard. The 16 Hooks runs trails only a 17-8 win at Midland on June 12.
Janek turned in his first Double-A multi-homer game and his second as a pro, launching a solo shot in the third and a two-run tater in the seventh. The Portland, Texas native and Sam Houston State product finished the night with a career-high five RBIs and four runs scored, going 4-for-5 along with a two-run double in the eighth.
Returning post all-star break from a 10-week stay on the IL, Janek is hitting .480 with two doubles, four home runs, and 10 RBIs over a stretch of seven games.
Call, 4-for-9 in the series, launched his first pro grand slam to cap the two-out barrage in the sixth. The Hooks sent 10 men to the plate in the inning with Jason Schiavone notching an RBI single and Yamal Encarnacion plating two to complete a three-RBI day.
Call now has three home runs in 11 Double-A games and 18 round-trippers on the season, placing him second on the Astros farm behind Schiavone's 23.
Kenni Gomez notched three hits for a second consecutive night, with Schiavone going 5-for-9 in the series. Gomez and Schiavone each have three doubles in two games to start the week.
Brett Gillis stranded seven baserunners over the first three innings while turning in four frames of one-run ball. Gillis, making his 17th appearance and 15th start, leads qualified Texas League pitchers in ERA (3.59), WHIP (1.16), and opponent batting average (.216).
Railin Perez and Hudson Leach each struck out two in a perfect inning of relief.
