Eastlake, Ohio—Three Dayton pitchers combined to allow only three hits and Mason Neville hit a solo home run as the Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday. The Captains broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh in the second game to defeat the Dragons 4-3 and split the doubleheader.
Recap: In the first game, Dayton pitchers Edgar Colon, Brady Afthim, and Trent Hodgdon combined to limit Lake County to only three hits. The Captains advanced only three runners past first base in the game while Dayton’s Justin Lebron collected three hits and Tyson Lewis added two hits and two runs batted in. Mason Neville hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 10th homer in just 34 games with the Dragons and his 19th overall this season in the Reds farm system.
In the second game, the Dragons trailed 2-1 in the third inning when John Michael Faile connected on a long solo home to left field to tie the game. The homer was Faile’s ninth of the year and his seventh in his last 17 games. Faile’s home run gave him 26 in his career with the Dragons, four short of the club record.
Lake County jumped back ahead with a run in the bottom of the third before the Dragons tied the game again in the sixth. Esmith Pineda singled to right to start the inning and Eric Becker singled to left. Two batters later, Faile delivered a two-out run-scoring single to right to tie the game at 3-3. But Lake County won the game, collecting three straight hits in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walk-off win.
The Dragons had nine hits in the second game, led by Faile, who was 3 for 4 with homer and two RBI. Becker had two hits. The Dragons stranded 14 runners in the second game (seven-inning game) and went 1 for 23 in the doubleheader with runners in scoring position.
