Dayton, Ohio—Chuck Davalan and Chase Harlan hit first inning home runs and five Great Lakes pitchers combined to allow just four hits as the Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-1 on Friday night. The Loons have won three of the first four games in the six-game series that continues through Sunday.
A crowd of 7,517 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.
Recap: Great Lakes scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead. Davalan opened the game with a home run to right field, and three batters later, Harlan belted a two-run homer. The Loons added one more run in the inning against Dayton starter Edgar Colon, making his first start at the High-A level after being moved up earlier this week from Single-A Daytona.
Dragons pitchers kept the Loons scoreless over the next five innings but the Dragons could not generate any offense. John Michael Faile connected on an opposite field home run for Dayton in the sixth inning, his sixth of the season and fourth in his last 11 games, to allow the Dragons to avoid the shutout. But they had just one hit over the rest of the night. Great Lakes added two runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Faile had a good night at the plate for the Dragons, reaching base in all four plate appearances with a homer, double, and two walks. But the remainder of the lineup contributed just two hits, singles by Julio Carreras in the third inning and Kyle Henley in the seventh.
Colon worked two and one-third innings as the starter for the Dragons. After allowing four runs in the first, he retired five of the next six batters he faced before leaving on a pitch limit. Colon allowed four hits, four runs, and two walks while striking out three.
Drew Pestka tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Colon. David Lorduy tossed the final four and two-thirds allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
