Davenport, Iowa—Four Quad Cities pitchers combined to scatter six hits as the River Bandits defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-0 on Sunday night. With the win, the River Bandits now lead the Midwest League Championship Series, one game to none.
The best-of-three set will move to Day Air Ballpark in Dayton for the remainder of the series with games scheduled for 7:05 pm on Tuesday and (if necessary) Wednesday.
Recap: Quad Cities scored two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a fielding error by Dragons second baseman Johnny Ascanio on a potential double play ball to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The River Bandits added single runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-0.
The Dragons had two good chances to score. They loaded the bases in the fifth inning when Ascanio walked, Kyle Henley reached on an infield single, and Kien Vu drew a two-out walk, but Justin Lebron was retired on a soft looper to second base to end the threat.
Still trailing 4-0 in the eighth, the Dragons loaded the bases with one out on a double by Ty Doucette, a single by John Michael Faile, and a walk to Ryan McCrystal, but with the tying run at the plate, Ascanio grounded to shortstop into an inning-ending double play. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth inning.
The Dragons finished with six hits, one more than the River Bandits. Doucette had a single and double.
Dragons relievers David Lorduy and Edgar Colon combined to hold Quad Cities without a hit or run over the final four and two-thirds innings to give the offense a chance to battle back.
