DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Dusty Revis delivered another dominant six-inning performance out of the bullpen and the Daytona Tortugas scored in four different innings to defeat the Palm Beach Cardinals, 5-2, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Daytona extended its winning streak to six games and its franchise-record home winning streak to 13 straight while becoming the first Florida State League team to reach 30 victories in the second half. The Tortugas also secured their fifth consecutive home series victory with their fourth win of the week over Palm Beach.
The Rundown
Daytona jumped in front immediately against Palm Beach starter Jan Cabrera. Jalen Hairston walked to begin the bottom of the first before Steele Hall doubled to right, although Hairston was cut down attempting to score. After a groundout moved Hall to third, Arnaldo Lantigua doubled down the left-field line to bring him home. Lantigua then stole third and Ichiro Cano lined a single to left to make it 2-0.
The Tortugas added another run in the second. Anielson Buten opened the inning with a double to left and Henry Hunter followed with a single to left-center, scoring Buten and extending the lead to 3-0.
Meanwhile, Reds No. 21 prospect, Ryjeteri Merite continued his scoreless run on the mound. The left-hander worked around two walks and a single in the first before retiring six consecutive batters to finish his outing. Merite allowed just one hit over 3.0 shutout innings while striking out four, extending his scoreless streak to 6.0 innings.
Revis took over to begin the fourth and immediately picked up where Merite left off. He retired the first two batters he faced before issuing a walk and inducing a popup to finish a scoreless inning.
Daytona gave him another run in the bottom of the fourth. Rafhlmil Torres doubled to right to begin the frame, stole third and scored when Buten lined a single up the middle, giving the Tortugas a 4-0 advantage.
Palm Beach finally broke through against Revis in the sixth. Yairo Padilla singled to left and advanced to third after a walk and a flyout. A wild pitch brought Padilla home, but Revis struck out Gabe Camacho to strand the remaining runner and keep Daytona ahead, 4-1.
Revis responded by facing the minimum in the seventh. After an error allowed J.P. Cabrera to reach, Trevor Haskins grounded into a double play before Heriberto Caraballo grounded out to end the inning.
Daytona restored its four-run cushion in the bottom half. Hunter walked to lead off the seventh and Hairston drove him home with a double to right-center, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Palm Beach scored once more in the eighth when Dee Kennedy doubled and eventually came home on a fielder's choice, but Revis stranded another runner to keep the Tortugas ahead by three.
Revis returned for the ninth and finished the job himself. Camacho flew out to center, Cabrera grounded out and Haskins struck out swinging to complete the 5-2 victory.
The six-inning outing matched Revis' career high, which he established just six days earlier at St. Lucie. He allowed only three hits and two runs while striking out five, giving him 12.0 innings over his last two appearances.
