DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Daytona Tortugas' six-game winning streak and franchise-record 13-game home winning streak came to an end Saturday night as the Palm Beach Cardinals defeated Daytona, 4-1, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Daytona collected eight hits but was held scoreless through six innings and hit into four double plays as Palm Beach dropped the Tortugas' record at 51-62 overall and to 30-17 in the second half.
The Rundown
Justin Henschel and Palm Beach starter Jefferson Moran traded scoreless innings through the first two frames. Jalen Hairston opened the bottom of the first with a single, while Arnaldo Lantigua singled in the second, but Daytona could not turn either baserunner into a run.
Palm Beach broke through in the third when Trevor Haskins led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center field. Heriberto Caraballo followed with a triple, but Jirvin Morillo picked him off third base before Henschel escaped the inning without any additional damage.
The Cardinals doubled their advantage one inning later. Alexander Frias led off the fourth with a solo home run to center field, putting Palm Beach ahead, 2-0.
Henschel settled back in after the second homer. He worked around a one-out single in the fifth by inducing Caraballo into an inning-ending double play, then retired the first two hitters of the sixth before Sebastian Dos Santos drew a walk. Alejandro Rivera entered from the bullpen and Matthew Miura doubled to right field to score Dos Santos, extending the Cardinals' lead to 3-0.
Daytona finally broke through in the seventh. Lantigua and Adolfo Sanchez opened the inning with consecutive singles before Ichiro Cano loaded the bases with a one-out infield hit. Drew Davies followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Lantigua, but Frias threw out Sanchez attempting to score from second on the play, ending the inning with Daytona trailing, 3-1.
Palm Beach restored its three-run advantage in the eighth. Ryan Mitchell walked and Dos Santos singled before Frias walked to load the bases. Miura eventually lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Mitchell and make it 4-1.
The Tortugas threatened in the bottom half when Anielson Buten singled and Hairston walked before a wild pitch moved both into scoring position. Mulivai Levu then walked to load the bases with one out, but Lantigua grounded into Palm Beach's fourth double play of the night to end the threat.
Jesús García retired Daytona in order in the ninth to close out the 4-1 final and snap both the Tortugas' six-game overall winning streak and their franchise-record 13-game home winning streak.
