The 2026 season was a year of learning and battling adversity for the Delmarva Shorebirds. Despite a tough win-loss record, there were still meaningful standout wins and individual performances throughout the year.
The Shorebirds' first win of the season came on April 3 against Salem. Delmarva rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, including a two-run double by Junior Aybar that put them ahead in the final frame and gave Aybar a career-high five RBIs in an 11-10 victory.
Through the first month of the season, the Shorebirds had a dominant arm at the top of their rotation in LHP Caden Hunter. The 5th-round pick by the Orioles out of the University of Southern California made six appearances with Delmarva, throwing 23 innings, striking out 40 batters, walking 12, and posting a 1.17 ERA, allowing just three earned runs.
He made his mark with Delmarva by winning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for May 12-17, during which he made two starts against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, giving up just one run on one hit over 8.2 innings, striking out 18 batters with 3 walks. He was one of the first players from Delmarva to earn a promotion to Frederick, being moved up on May 26 and he would continue his stellar run in High-A as he was later promoted to Double-A Chesapeake on July 28 and finished the season there.
In addition to Hunter, the Shorebirds’ most consistent pitcher was RHP Christian Rodriguez. The former 2024 10th-round pick did not make his professional debut until this year after missing 2025 due to open-heart surgery. C-Rod established himself as one of the best arms in the Carolina League, where he led the league in ERA (2.94), innings pitched (94.2), and strikeouts (100) during his time in Delmarva, earning his promotion to High-A Frederick on July 28.
He had two seven-innings starts, with perhaps his best on July 11, when he shut out the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, striking out four, walking one, and allowing five hits in an 8-0 victory, one of Delmarva’s most complete performances of 2026.
On the offensive side, there were several standouts, starting with DJ Layton, Delmarva’s primary shortstop during the season. After a tough debut season in the Florida Complex League in 2025, the former 2024 6th-round pick broke out in a major way, playing in 95 games before being promoted to Frederick on August 11. He finished with 29 extra-base hits, 45 RBIs, 64 runs scored, and 32 stolen bases, while also pacing the team with an .785 OPS. Layton developed a strong eye at the plate, with a team-best 73 walks. He put together a 23-game on-base streak, the longest run by a Shorebird since 2021.
Layton was joined in the infield by Jaiden Lo Re, who developed into one of the Orioles’ breakout stars in the minor leagues in his first season of professional baseball. Lo Re joined the Shorebirds at the start of June after a dominant month in the Florida Complex League.
Baltimore’s fifth-round pick from 2025 hit the ground running, hitting .361 in his first month, and homered in his third game with the team in Augusta on June 5. He went on to win the Orioles’ Minor League Player of the Month for June and continued to build on that success, finishing in the top five in the Carolina League in hits (66) and batting average (.325) during the span he played with Delmarva until he was moved up to Frederick on August 26.
Delmarva’s statistical leader at the end of the season was outfielder Stiven Martinez, who led the team in games played with 102. Martinez originally debuted with the Shorebirds as a 17-year-old in July 2025. He developed into the power bat many anticipated, leading the team with 14 homers and 58 RBIs.
He also put together his best month at the end of the season in August, hitting .280 with 5 home runs and 19 RBIs while walking 16 times. His signature game came on May 12, when he delivered his first career multi-homer game, hitting a long ball in the seventh and eighth innings in a 7-2 win over the Woodpeckers.
There was plenty of excitement in the final few weeks of the season as the Orioles sent their first group of 2026 draft picks to Delmarva, including Eric Booth Jr., the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. Booth wasted no time, picking up his first career hit and RBI in just his second at-bat in his debut game on August 11, a 3-2 walk-off win over the Salem RidgeYaks, the Shorebirds' lone walk-off win of the 2026 season.
Booth heated up and found his stride over the final few weeks, finishing the season on an 8-game hitting streak, including four multi-hit games, with his first career three-hit performance on September 5 against Kannapolis.
Booth could headline a very talented group of Shorebirds to open the 2027 season, which could be a bounce-back season for Delmarva in what will be the 31st season of Delmarva Shorebirds baseball, beginning on Friday, April 2, when they host the Fredericksburg Nationals.
