Fredericksburg Holds Off Delmarva's Late Comeback Attempt
Shorebirds' Offense Held in Check in Friday's Defeat to Fred Nats
FREDERICKSBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (37-69, 14-26) were defeated by the Fredericksburg Nationals (65-40, 19-20) on Friday, 5-3.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Shorebirds manufactured the game's first run. Back-to-back groundouts following a leadoff double by Jaiden Lo Re scored the opening run, and Jordan Sanchez collected the RBI to make it 1-0.
The Fred Nats came back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a two-run homer by Coy James (17). A few batters later, Elian Soto tripled home Juan Cruz, making it 3-1. Dashyll Tejeda capped the inning with an RBI single, putting Fredericksburg in front 4-1.
Jordan Williams (7) extended the lead to 5-1 for Fredericksburg in the sixth with a solo home run.
The Shorebirds' offense struggled to find answers against Alexander Meckley. The starter for the Fred Nats threw a career-high 7.1 innings, allowed just five base runners, and struck out eight, including a stretch where he retired 15 in a row.
After Meckley departed, Delmarva mounted a rally when Jordan Sanchez singled home two runs, giving him three RBIs for a second straight game and ten for the series, trimming the deficit to 5-3.
However, that's as close as the Shorebirds could get, as they were defeated by the Fred Nats by that 5-3 score.
Alexander Meckley (4-3) was the winning pitcher, while Holden deJong (0-1) took the loss in his Single-A debut. Leodarlyn Colon (1) recorded the final five outs for the save.
Delmarva continues its series in Fredericksburg on Saturday, with Harrison Kreiling making his organizational debut for the Shorebirds against major-league rehabber DJ Herz for the Fred Nats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
