Shorebirds Hold Off RidgeYaks to Regain Series Lead
Delmarva Set to Play for Series Win Sunday
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (40-73, 17-30) topped the Salem RidgeYaks (49-62, 24-22) 7-3 on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first inning, the Shorebirds took the lead in the second on a balk by Sadbiel Delzine with runners at the corners, allowing Jimmy Anderson to score and make it 1-0.
In the third, the Shorebirds used a pair of two-out RBI singles from Elvin Garcia and Miguel Rodriguez to extend their lead to 3-0.
Esteban Mejia put together another impressive outing for the Shorebirds, throwing three scoreless innings as the starter, giving him five consecutive scoreless frames since his last start.
Delmarva put another run on the board in the fourth on an error, as Félix Amparo scored on a ball off the bat of Jhomnardo Reyes to make it a 4-0 game.
The Shorebirds put together their best inning in the sixth, scoring three times on an RBI single by Jhomnardo Reyes, his first multi-hit game with Delmarva. A two-run single by Stiven Martinez moments later made it 7-0.
The RidgeYaks produced their first runs with back-to-back home runs by Wills Maginnis (1) and Franklin Primera (3) in the eighth, trimming Delmarva's lead to 7-2.
Salem mounted one final rally in the ninth inning, bringing home a run on a sacrifice fly by Colton Coats to make it 7-3. They then loaded the bases with two outs, but Brandon Downer induced a game-ending groundout from Skylar King to preserve a 7-3 win for the Shorebirds.
Brayan Orrantia (1-7) earned his first professional win, throwing a career-high five innings of relief, while Sadbiel Delzine (0-1) took the loss for Salem.
The Shorebirds go for a series win on Sunday with Francisco Morao taking the mound against Jose Bello for the RidgeYaks. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
