Delmarva's Offense Musters Only Three Hits in Defeat
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (42-81, 19-38) were shut out by the Fredericksburg Nationals (73-49, 27-29) for the second consecutive night, 9-0.
The Fred Nats jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three times in the first inning on a two-run single by Juan Cruz and a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Kevin Made, making it 3-0.
Fredericksburg extended their lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Juan Cruz, giving him three RBIs for the game and making it 4-0.
The deficit grew to 5-0 in the fifth when a dropped fly ball allowed a two-out run to score.
In the seventh, the Fred Nats plated two more runs on another run-scoring single by Juan Cruz, followed by a sacrifice fly by Cashel Dugger, putting Delmarva behind 7-0.
Kevin Made drove home two with a single in the eighth, putting the Fred Nats on top 9-0.
The Shorebirds' offense never got going, as they were shut out for a second consecutive game, finishing with three hits in a 9-0 loss.
Sam Broderson (2-0) was the winning pitcher for Fredericksburg, while Esteban Mejia (0-8) took the loss for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds try to get back in the win column on Friday, with Juan Nuñez taking the mound as a minor-league rehabber against Landon Harmon for Fredericksburg, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
