Durham, NC --- Joe Boyle fanned 11 over 5 2/3 innings to lead the Durham Bulls to their second straight shutout over the Norfolk Tides, claiming a 4-0 decision before 8,181 fans at the DBAP on Saturday.
Boyle (W, 2-6) permitted just two singles and two walks as the Bulls (32-23) moved to within 1 1/2 of the first place tandem Rochester and Indianapolis.
Durham took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a sacrifice fly by Caden Bodine, scoring Victor Mesa. Tides starter Michael Forret (L, 0-2) walked the bases loaded with one out before the Mesa flyball to center.
The Bulls made it 3-0 in the second on another sac fly, this time from Nick Madrigal. Xavier Isaac scored from third, but as the throw from right fielder Heston Kjerstad went toward third, it bounced off the body of Jack Suwinski and deflected into foul grounds, allowing Suwinski to score as well for a 3-0 lead.
Suwinski bounced a single to left-center with two outs in the sixth to score Isaac.
Cole Sulser, Michael Grove, Hunter Bigge and Kodi Whitley combined on the remaining 3 1/3 innings of the shutout win over the Tides (20-33).
Isaac had three of the eight Durham hits, connecting for two singles and a double and two runs scored. Caden Bodine was 2-3 with a double, single and sac fly RBI.
Jake Woodford (0-2, 5.40) is expected to start Sunday's series finale against Cade Povich (2-4, 5.68) at 1:05 PM ET.
Notes: The shutout was Durham's sixth and second in a row, limiting the Tides to seven singles over the 18 inning span... Boyle's 11 strikeouts were one shy of matching his career-high... Sulser worked back-to-back outings for the first time in his rehab stint, throwing 15 pitches against four batters Friday night and 13 pitches against three batters on Saturday.... With the victory, the Bulls are assured of the season-series victory over the Tides, leading 13-10 with one game to play.
