Durham, NC** --- Five Memphis pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Redbirds claimed a 6-0 verdict over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night at the DBAP.
Cooper Hjerpe tossed the first four innings, permitting only one hit to lead the Redbirds (17-23) to the series-opening win. Four Redbirds relievers collaborated on the final five innings, yielding three hits while striking out eight.
Shane McClanahan threw three pristine innings in a major league rehab assignment for the Tampa Bay Rays. The two-time all-star McClanahan, on the IL with back discomfort, retired all nine batters on a total of 30 pitches, fanning two.
Memphis broke the scoreless game in the fifth against Bulls reliever Mason Englert (L, 0-5). Ramon Mendoza singled with two outs to score Joshua Baez for a 1-0 lead, then Noah Mendlinger followed with a two-run double.
In the sixth, Thomas Saggese stroked a two-run double with two outs to push the lead to 5-0. Colton Ledbetter tacked on a solo homer in the ninth to put Memphis ahead 6-0.
The Bulls managed just four hits - two singles from Tre Morgan and Kenny Piper - and two doubles from Jack Suwinski and Nick Madrigal.
The six-game series continues Wednesday night with Jake Woodford (0-0, 0.00) expected to start against Quinn Mathews (5-4, 3.32) at 6:45 PM ET.
Notes: The Bulls began the night 1/2 game out of the International League lead, but in a third-place tie. Indianapolis and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre entered the night atop the league... Woodford, who has pitched with two major league teams in 2026, signed a free agent deal with the Rays earlier in the day on Tuesday. Woodford was with the Rays late into spring training in 2026 before being dealt away to the Brewers.... Manny Rodriguez made his fifth rehab appearance for the Bulls, facing six batters in the ninth inning, and surrendering Ledbetter's homer to right. Cam Hill relieved Rodriguez with the bases loaded and two outs. Hill recorded the final out of the inning on one pitch.
