Charlotte, NC --- A three-run third inning propelled the Charlotte Knights past the Durham Bulls 5-3 at Truist Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights (20-19) claimed the series 4-games-to-2 with the victory, handing Durham (24-14) its first series loss of the second and knocking the Bulls out of first place in the second half.
Durham moved ahead 1-0 in the second inning thanks to a pair of doubles from Tatem Levins and Blake Sabol.
A solo home run by Korey Lee in the bottom half against Joe Boyle (L, 1-6) tied the game 1-1.
The Bulls reclaimed the advantage in the third inning. Nick Madrigal tripled into the right field corner to start the inning, then scored on a groundout from Jack Suwinski.
But the Knights capitalized on a pair of walks from Boyle to start the third inning, then on the backside of an RBI-single from Ryan Galanie, left fielder Sabol allowed the single to roll under his glove and behind to the left field wall to allow a second run to score to put Charlotte up 3-2. With Galanie at third, one out later a light grounder to short scored Galanie for a 4-2 lead.
Durham threatened in the seventh, scoring a run to close to 4-3, but a miraculous catch prevented the Bulls from tying the game. With runners at first and third with two outs, Adisyn Coffey grooved a pitch to Austin Slater, who smacked a 95mph liner into the red glove of Coffey, which was behind the back of the Charlotte pitcher on the follow through of his pitch.
Durham outhit the Knights 10-6, but permitted two solo homers along with two walks that came around to score.
The Knights won the season series with Durham 14-4, just their third series win over the Bulls in 20 years.
With the loss, the Bulls fell into a third place tie, one half game behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Indianapolis.
Durham heads back home to battle first half champion Memphis on Tuesday night at 6:45 PM ET.
