Bulls Return to First Place with 9-6 Win in Front of Record Crowd in Charlotte
Homer Bush and Nick Madrigal lead Durham’s offense as the Bulls score seven of the game’s final eight runs in front of a record crowd in Charlotte
Charlotte, NC --- The Durham Bulls defeated the Charlotte Knights and moved back into first place in front of their largest crowd in Truist Field history thanks to a 9-6 win on Saturday night.
The Knights (19-19) packed a record 11,355 fans, but witnessed the Bulls (24-13) score four times in the second inning against reliever Tommy Vail (L, 0-1). Vail, who was an emergency call-up from A-ball, allowed five straight batters to reach with two outs, surrendering a pair of two-run doubles to Homer Bush and Nick Madrigal.
Charlotte tied the game with four in the second against Bulls starter Logan Workman, but Durham quickly reclaimed the lead in the third with a pair of runs. Logan Driscoll hit a sacrifice fly to score Jack Suwinski, then Tatem Levins singled home Austin Slater for a 6-4 lead.
Leading 6-5 in the sixth, Bush singled with one out, stole second and third and scored on a single to right by Madrigal. Durham scored twice in the seventh resulting from a two-run bouncing single to center by Logan Davidson.
Manny Rodruigez (W, 1-0) threw a clean 13-pitch sixth inning on a rehab assignment to earn the win. Evan Reifert (S, 2) entered with two outs and two on in the ninth to fan Tim Elko to close out the win.
Madrigal went 3-4 with three RBI to pace the Bulls. Bush and Davidson each had two hits.
Workman pitched three innings of four-run ball in his first start since May 28th.
With the victory, parlayed with Scranton's loss to Rochester, the Bulls moved back into first place, joined by Worcester, one-half game ahead of the RailRiders.
