Memphis, TN --- Carson Williams hit a grand slam to pace a 16-hit attack as the Durham Bulls mauled the Memphis Redbirds 16-1 on Wednesday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
The Bulls (33-25) spotted the Redbirds (25-34) a 1-0 lead in the third before beginning a 16 unanswered run assault.
Durham scored five times in the fourth to seize command, with all five runs scoring with two outs. The first run scored on an error by first baseman Trey Paige, who booted Jack Suwinski's groundball, and as the ball deflected off the foot of Paige, Xavier Isaac scored as the ball careened into centerfield. Oliver Dunn followed with an RBI-single, then following a walk, Nick Madrigal doubled home a pair. Suwinski also scored on the back-end of a double steal for a 5-1 lead.
In the fifth, singles by Austin Slater and Isaac set up the inning, and following a pitching change and a walk, Williams clubbed a grand slam over the top of the left field wall to push the Durham lead to 9-1.
The Bulls tacked on three more in the sith. Slater singled home Madrigal from second base, then Isaac powered an opposite-field 403-foot homer to left against reliever Ryan Murphy.
Durham finished the scoring with three in the eighth, two of which scored on bases loaded walks.
In total, the Bulls amassed 16 hits and drew nine walks in the series-leveling win.
Logan Workman (W, 3-7) worked five innings, allowing only a third inning run on consecutive doubles. Brody Hopkins, Steven Wilson, Hunter Bigge and Evan Reifert each tossed a scoreless inning.
Four Durham hitters had three hits. Madrigal went 3-5 with three RBI. Isaac was 3-6 with three runs scored. Williams went 3-4 with four RBI and two walks. Oliver Dunn was 3-6 with a double and RBI. Suwinski and Slater each had two.
The Bulls pulled to within two games of first place Rochester, which was rained out on Wednesday.
Mason Englert (2-6, 4.85) starts against former Bulls and Rays lefty Josh Fleming (0-2, 4.91) on Thursday night at 7:45 PM ET.
Notes: Wednesday afternoon's game started at 93 degrees, reaching a peak of 98 at game's end. The heat index hovered at 106... Isaac clubbed his 26th combined home run of the season in the sixth inning, smashing a two-strike curveball from Ryan Murphy beyond the left field wall. Isaac's blast carried a whopping 403 feet and left the bat at 106mph.... Slater was in his first Durham game since August 23rd. Slater was released by the Rays, but re-signed with Tampa Bay on a minor league deal Monday.... Memphis closed out the game with catcher Andy Yerzy pitching the ninth. Yerzy, whose last pitching performance was in 2023, did not allow a run and stranded the bases loaded. Yerzy fanned Tatem Levins for the second out in the game. In Yerzy's last relief appearance in 2023, he threw the ninth in a 29-3 Chattanooga victory over Rocket City, a game in which Yerzy was the DH for the Lookouts. He homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in nine runs in the game before pitching a shutout ninth inning.
