**Durham, NC -**-- Chase Davis doubled, hit a grand slam and drove in five to lead the Memphis Redbirds past the Durham Bulls 12-2 before 7,042 fans on Friday night at the DBAP.
The Bulls (25-17) opened the scoring against Memphis starter Mason Molina (W, 1-2) with back-to-back homers in the first inning from Austin Slater and Oliver Dunn.
But the Redbirds (19-24) scored four times in the third against starter Logan Workman (L, 1-7), then added five in the fourth against Manny Rodriguez and Chris Clark.
Davis connected for a grand slam in the fourth against Clark, who was just called up from Double-A.
Chase Ledbetter hit a three-run homer in the eighth to push the Memphis lead to 12-2.
The Bulls mustered just two other hits in the game after the two home runs. Justyn-Henry Malloy beat out an infield single in the seventh, then Kenny Piper doubled in the ninth.
The series continues on Saturday night with Joe Boyle (1-6, 9.13) expected to start against Ixan Henderson (0-0, 0.00) at 6:45 PM ET.
Notes: After the Bulls went through four pitchers in eight innings, Blake Sabol entered to make his professional pitching debut in the ninth. Sabol hit a batter, allowed a single, but then retired the next three to escape damage. Malloy caught a liner at third base to end the ninth... Memphis outfielder Joshua Baez is expected to make his major league debut for St. Louis on Saturday at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Baez is leading the International League with 34 homers and 90 RBI, and is second in the minors in home runs.... Bulls manager Morgan Ensberg is away from the team for the final three games of the Memphis series for a family event. German Melendez will be the acting manager for the final three games of the series. Ensberg is expected to return on Tuesday when the Bulls play on the road against Gwinnett.... The Redbirds have outscored Durham 27-8 in the first four games of the series.
