Durham, NC --- A five-run third inning surged the Memphis Redbirds past the Durham Bulls 7-3 on Wednesday night at the DBAP.
The Bulls (24-16) dropped their second straight to the first-half champion Redbirds (18-23). Jake Woodford (L, 0-1) permitted four soft hits and four runs during Memphis' big frame that turned a 1-0 Durham lead into a 5-1 deficit.
Nolan Gorman and Chase Davis connected for solo homers in the fifth and sixth as Memphis built a 7-1 lead.
Durham scored twice in the sixth thanks to a sac fly from Tre Morgan and a single from Austin Slater to trim the deficit to 7-3.
Durham stranded 13 baserunners in the game, going 2-10 with runners in scoring position.
Slater, Oliver Dunn and Logan Davidson each had two hits to pace the Durham offense.
Jesse Scholtens (2-2, 3.04) is slated to start on Thursday night against Jurrangelo Cjintje (0-3, 8.00) at 6:45 PM ET.
Notes: The Redbirds have outscored the Bulls 13-3 across the first two games of the series... Woodford allowed four hits in the third inning, none of which hit harder than 79mph, but all four runners came around to score... Nick Madrigal reached base twice on Wednesday night, but exited the game after the eighth inning. Madrigal was hit by a pitch near his left elbow in the bottom of the eighth inning. Madrigal stayed in to run the bases, but was removed ahead of the ninth inning.... Bulls manager Morgan Ensberg was ejected by third base umpire Josiah Shepherd in the sixth inning after a disputed foul ball was called. Noah Mendlinger fouled a ball off of his instep, with the ball deflecting on top of the plate. Home plate umpire Casey James ruled the ball fair, which was picked up by catcher Kenny Piper, who made the throw to first base. But Shepherd called the deflection from his third base position, halting the play. Ensberg calmly disputed the call, but was tossed from the game as he was walking toward the dugout.
