Durham, NC --- Jake Cave singled home the tying run in the seventh, then doubled home the game-winning run in the 10th to lead the Durham Bulls past the Memphis Redbirds 3-2 at the DBAP on Thursday night.
The Bulls (25-16) were held in check by Memphis starter Jurrangelo Cijntje into the seventh inning, trailing 1-0 thanks to a Joshua Baez homer in the fifth. However, Cijntje issued a one-out walk in the seventh, then departed the game with an apparent minor injury. Oliver Dunn stole second base against the reliever Ryan Murphy, then scored to tie the game on a two-out hit to right-center by Cave.
The tie was maintained into the 10th before Baez drilled a single to score pinch-runner Victor Scott to put Memphis (18-24) ahead 2-1 against Cam Hill (W, 4-2).
Austin Love entered for the 10th, but immediately allowed a game-tying single from Blake Sabol to score Dunn from second base. Cave followed with a soft grounder inside the third base line. The ball caromed off the side wall and shot across left field, with Baez barehanding the ball and heaving wide of home plate as Sabol scored the winning run.
Six Durham pitchers combined on the four-hitter, with Alex Cook, Ty Johnson and Owen Wild each tossing two scoreless innings.
The fourth game of the series is set for Friday night with Logan Workman (1-6, 6.66) expected to match up against Mason Molina (0-2, 9.30) at 6:45 PM ET.
Notes: Cijntje struck out a career-high 11 batters over 6 1/3 innings, and pitched exclusively right-handed against the Bulls despite Durham featuring six left-handed batters... Cook opened with two scoreless innings, firing 21 strikes of his 23 pitches... Durham turned three double plays in the game, including DPs in the ninth and 10th innings... Justyn-Henry Malloy made his first start of the season at third base, committing a throwing error in the second inning, but making a self-defense catch of a line drive at 101mph, then starting a 5-4-3 double play in the ninth by fielding a 103mph short-hop smash... Both teams combined to fan 29 batters.
