EL PASO – August 9, 2026 – Right-handed pitcher Joe Musgrove is expected to make a rehab start with the El Paso Chihuahuas in their series finale against the Reno Aces on Sunday, August 9. It will mark his second rehab stint with El Paso, and his first since April 2023.
Musgrove, 33, completed a rehab start with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Wednesday. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
He was placed on the 15-day injured list in late March and transferred to the 60-day injured list in early May. Musgrove is looking to get back to the Major Leagues for the first time since 2024, after missing all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
In four seasons with the San Diego Padres, Musgrove is 37-24 with a 3.20 ERA.
On April 9, 2021, Musgrove tossed the first no-hitter in Padres history. It came against the Texas Rangers when he struck out 10 batters over 112 pitches at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. The El Cajon, CA native became the 6th pitcher since 1900 to toss a no-hitter for a team from the state where he was born, joining Jered Weaver (LAA), Kevin Gross (LAD), Nolan Ryan (TEX), Terry Mulholland (PHI), and Dave Stewart (OAK).
He finished the 2021 season with an 11-9 record and a 3.18 ERA, setting career-highs in innings pitched (181.1) and strikeouts (203). He led San Diego’s pitching staff in both wins (11) and games started (31).
In 2022, Musgrove was named a National League All-Star and finished the season 10-7 with a 2.93 ERA across 30 starts. Musgrove became the first pitcher in MLB history to post an 8-0 record (or better) with an ERA of 1.60 or lower and 80 or more strikeouts over his first 12 appearances of the season. He also recorded 21 quality starts.
Musgrove tallied three-straight 10-win seasons in his first three years as a Padre. He began his career with the Houston Astros (2016-17), winning a World Series in 2017, before pitching three seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20). He was acquired by the Padres in a three-team trade in January 2021, involving the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Chihuahuas’ 2026 season continues Sunday, August 9, in Reno for the series finale between the El Paso Chihuahuas (11-26, 46-66) and the Reno Aces (20-18, 52-61).
