FRESNO, Calif. – A dominant start from Brady Parker and a pair of clutch hits in the middle innings from Daniel Jackson carried the Fresno Grizzlies to a 2-1 win over the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park.
Parker was outstanding, working 5.2 scoreless innings and striking out seven while allowing just three hits.
He kept the Ports off balance all night and left the game with the score still tied at zero, setting the stage for the bullpen and the offense to finish the job.
Both offenses struggled to find their footing early, with Stockton managing only a handful of scattered singles against Parker and Fresno unable to cash in despite putting runners on base in three of the first five innings.
Redinson Gomez relieved Parker in the sixth, getting a lineout to end a bases loaded threat in the inning.
Parker’s battery mate, Jackson broke through in the sixth.
The Grizzlies catcher led off the inning with a solo homer to right-center, his third of the season, giving Fresno a 1-0 lead and continuing a hot series in which he’s hitting over .500 against the North Division foes.
Ben Davis worked a scoreless seventh for the Grizzlies, shutting down Stockton with a pickoff to finish the inning while Jackson erased the first runner of the inning who was trying to steal second.
After Yanzel Correa worked around a couple of base runners in the 8th, Fresno looked for more cushion.
Jackson fueled Fresno’s insurance run in the eighth, singling with one out, and after Ronny Ugarte moved him to second with a groundout, Juan Martinez ripped a clutch two-out double scoring Jackson and increasing the lead to 2-0.
Stockton tallied two hits to start the inning, a single and a double to score a run and put the tying run in scoring position.
Correa then notched a strikeout and got an innocent fly out to keep the runner at second.
Roman Martin roped the final pitch of the game towards the left field wall, but defensive replacement Cort MacDonald sprinted back and robbed the Ports of the game-tying hit and ended the ballgame with a needed catch.
Parker finished with 7 strikeouts on the night, moving him into sole possession of 10th in the Grizzlies record books for single-season strikeouts at 138 on the season, the highest total in the California League this season.
The win secures the season-series and head-to-head tie-breaker over Stockton for the Grizzlies with the series finale on Sunday.
Fresno sits one game behind Stockton with 13 games remaining in the regular season.
The North Division rivals finish the pivotal series Sunday night at Chukchansi Park with first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm.
