MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (71-51) (35-23) offense posted 13 runs on 15 hits in an onslaught of the Lansing Lugnuts (53-69) (24-34), a 13-5 win on a rainy 76-degree Saturday night at Dow Diamond. The Loons played as the Michigan Dogmen tonight.
- Great Lakes had six extra base hits, from six different players. Mairo Martinus tallied the most RBI with three, a three-run home run in the five-run first inning. Martinus ripped a ball the opposite way to make it 5-1. The 21-year-old has five home run in his 23 games with the Loons. This season he has smacked 20 in 117 games between Low-A and High-A.
- Chuck Davalan delivered his second home run of the series, fifth of August and 14th since July 1st. His 14 since July 1st lead the Midwest League. Tonight he poked one out on the fair side of the right field foul pole. The two-run shot made it 7-1 in the fourth inning.
- MiLB’s RBI leader Emil Morales added two today. The game-tying RBI double in the first and the eleventh straight unanswered run, an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The 19-year-old now has 115 in 111 games. August is his best output with 27 ribbies.
- Isaac Ayon earned the win with five runs and one run permitted. The right-hander struck out two and allowed no walks. The Loons bullpen issued six walks but gained eight strikeouts in their four innings.
- Eduardo Guerrero tallied two RBI, with three hits and Gio Cueto had two hits and two RBI.
Rounding Things Out
West Michigan lost to Peoria 13-10 in 11 innings and Lake County beat Cedar Rapids 10-3 today. The Loons now have a 3.5 game lead over the Whitecaps and are 4.5 games up on the Captains in the Midwest League East Division second half standings. Great Lakes has eight games remaining this season, their magic number is five.
