Grasshoppers Set SAL Record With 198th Home Run of Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro Grasshoppers fell to the Winston-Salem Dash, 8-6, on Tuesday, August 11, in the opening game of the series at First National Bank Field. Despite the loss, Greensboro made history by setting the South Atlantic League single-season home run record with its 198th homer of the season.

With the win, Winston-Salem improved to 21-21 in the second half of the season, while Greensboro fell to 25-18. The Grasshoppers outhit the Dash, 9-8.

Leading the way offensively for Greensboro was infielder Yordany De Los Santos, who went 4-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Axiel Plaz followed with a 2-for-4 performance, recording two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Plaz’s second home run of the night established the new SAL single-season home run record for Greensboro. Tony Blanco Jr. recorded two hits, while Jared Jones added one hit.

Kaleb Freeman led the way offensively for Winston-Salem, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBI and one run scored. The Dash also recorded hits from Ely Brown, Javier Mogollon, George Wolkow, Nick McLain, Kyle Lodise and Jeral Perez.

Right-handed pitcher Draven Zeigler got the start on the mound for Greensboro, striking out four while allowing two hits and two walks over four innings. Right-hander Carlson Reed was charged with the loss and fell to 4-4 on the season.

Left-handed pitcher Grant Umberger started for Winston-Salem, recording eight strikeouts while allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks over five innings. Landen Payne earned the win for the Dash to improve to 1-0 on the season. Drew Conover recorded his first hold, while Aric McAtee earned his fourth save.
