JACKSONVILLE, Florida – A two-out, two-run single by Chuckie Robinson lifted the Gwinnett Stripers (33-32, 71-68) to a 3-1 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (28-36, 70-68) and a split of the doubleheader on Tuesday night at VyStar Ballpark. Robinson’s heroics came after Gwinnett lost game one 1-0 despite a 6.0-inning complete game from Owen Murphy.
Decisive Plays (Game 1): Murphy cruised through four scoreless innings before finally dealing with adversity in the fifth. After a one-out walk to Matthew Etzel, he surrendered an RBI double to Logan Driscoll to put Jacksonville up 1-0. The Stripers were never able to back him with offense, stranding six on base and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Key Contributors (Game 1): Murphy (L, 5-8) pitched a 6.0-inning complete game (2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO), the first CG of any length in his career. Rowdy Tellez had both Stripers’ hits, going 2-for-3. Jake Walkinshaw (W, 2-2) and Stephen Jones (S, 8) combined for 3.0 scoreless innings to finish the game. Driscoll had the game’s lone extra-base hit and RBI (1-for-2, double).
Decisive Plays (Game 2): The Stripers jumped in front 1-0 in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by Brett Wisely, but Jacksonville quickly tied it at 1-1 in the second on an RBI infield single by Cam Cannarella. The game stayed 1-1 until the top of the sixth, when Robinson came through with a two-out, two-run single to center to score both Jose Azocar and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. for a 3-1 lead. Rolddy Muñoz (W, 1-4) and Danny Young (S, 1) held that lead over the final two frames.
Key Contributors (Game 2): Robinson (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Wisely (1-for-2, double, RBI) combined to drive in Gwinnett’s three runs. Spot starter Tyler Uberstine, Ricky Vanasco, Muñoz, and Young combined to hold Jacksonville to one run on two hits. Cannarella went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Jumbo Shrimp.
Noteworthy: Murphy is the second Striper to post a complete game this season, joining JR Ritchie (rain-shortened 5.0-inning CG win on August 8 vs. Jacksonville). Over his last five starts, Murphy has posted a 1.29 ERA (4 ER in 28.0 IP), 0.82 WHIP, and .128 BAA. Gwinnett is now 11-7 in doubleheaders this year.
