LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – The Gwinnett Stripers (29-29, 67-65) had a 1-0 lead entering the ninth inning on Tuesday night but couldn’t finish off the Charlotte Knights (30-28, 72-61) in a 3-1 loss in 10 innings at Gwinnett Field. Charlotte leads the series 1-0.
Decisive Plays: Both teams exchanged zeroes until the fifth inning when Chuckie Robinson drove in DaShawn Keirsey Jr. on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Gwinnett. The score did not change until the ninth, when rehabbing Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel launched a solo homer (3) to tie the game. In the 10th, Charlotte plated two more via an RBI single from Riley Unroe and bunt fielder’s choice from Rikuu Nishida for a 3-1 lead. The Stripers went down in order in the bottom of the 10th to seal the loss.
Key Contributors: David McCabe (1-for-2, 2 walks) reached three times in the loss. Starter Owen Murphy allowed just two hits over 6.1 scoreless innings but earned a no-decision after the Teel home run. For Charlotte, Teel (1-for-5, homer, RBI) had the only RBI extra-base hit.
Noteworthy: The Stripers are now 8-7 in extra-inning games. Murphy earned his team-best seventh quality start of the season and is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and .133 BAA in his last four starts with Gwinnett. Jim Jarvis's team-best 27-game on-base streak was snapped after a 0-for-5 performance.
