Hartford Falls to Erie 5-4 in Saturday Night Thriller

Hartford, CT - The Hartford Yard Goats lost to the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 5-4 on Saturday night in front of 7,143 fans at Dunkin’ Park. Jimmy Obertop delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning to give the Yard Goats a 4-3 lead. However, the SeaWolves scored two runs in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and a two-out single to take a 5-4 lead. Hartford right-hander Connor Staine delivered five strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six. Jack O’Dowd led Hartford at the plate, going 3-4 with two singles, including an RBI and a double.
In the bottom of the first, the Yard Goats struck first against SeaWolves starter Max Alba. Jared Thomas drew a walk and stole second before Dyan Jorge’s infield hit moved him to third. Andy Perez followed with an RBI groundout to score Thomas, giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves responded in the top of the second on an E.J. Exposito solo homer into left field to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the sixth, Erie took the lead. Back-to-back walks to Woody Hadeen and Zyhir Hope, set the stage for Thayron Liranzo, who doubled down the first-base line to score both runners, giving the SeaWolves a 3-1 lead.
Hartford responded in the bottom of the sixth. Braylen Wimmer ripped a double into left field before Jack O’Dowd followed with a sharp single to the opposite side, moving Wimmer to third. GJ Hill then lined a ball over the right fielder's head, scoring Wimmer and advancing O’Dowd to third. The Yard Goats inched closer, trailing 3-2 with both runners in scoring position. Jimmy Obertop followed with a clutch single into center, scoring both runners and giving Hartford a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth Erie regained the lead. Andrew Jenkins lined a single before Izaac Pacheco drew a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and another wild pitch brought home Jenkins to tie the game 4-4. Roberto Campos followed with an RBI single to score Pacheco and give the SeaWolves a 5-4 lead.
The Yard Goats wrap up their six-game series against the Detroit Tigers affiliate the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday at 1:10 pm. It’s Home Run for Heroes Day and Kid’s Run the Bases.
