NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Joshua Palacios provided a go-ahead double in the 10th inning and Michael Darrell-Hicks stranded the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom half of the frame as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Nashville Sounds, 3-2, in extra innings on Thursday night at First Horizon Park. Indy maintained its sole possession of first place in the International League second half standings.
With the game knotted 2-2 after nine innings, Dominic Fletcher advanced automatic runner Duce Gourson to third base with a groundout. Palacios then hit a high chopper down the first base line, as the ball bounced off the glove of a lunging Blake Burke to give the Indians (27-15, 58-59) a 3-2 lead.
Burke walked to open the bottom half of the extra inning, putting two on for Akil Baddoo. Baddoo crushed a ball off the wall in center field, putting the Sounds (20-22, 63-54) just inches away from a walk-off homer. The runners had to tag on the play as the bases were loaded with no outs. Jeferson Quero and Darrien Miller hit back-to-back pop ups on the infield and Darrell-Hicks (W, 1-0) struck out Ethan Murray to finish the game.
Indy opened the scoring with two runs in the first frame. Mitch Jebb hit a leadoff triple, Nick Yorke doubled him home and a second run scored with Johnathan Rodríguez grounding into a double play. Nashville evened the score in the seventh inning with a two-run single from Brock Wilken.
Thomas Harrington tossed 5.0 scoreless innings as the Indians’ starting pitcher. Blake Holub (L, 4-3) allowed the winning run in the game’s final inning.
The Indians continue this week’s six-game series at Nashville on Friday night at 7:35 PM ET. RHP Noah Davis (2-8, 4.50) is scheduled to start for Indy with RHP Coleman Crow (6-1, 3.74) taking the hill for the Sounds.
