TOLEDO, Ohio – The Indianapolis Indians escaped a no-hitter in the eighth inning behind the bat of Nick Cimillo, but fell, 2-1, to the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The Indians were held to their second one-hit game of the year and 11th in the Victory Field era.
The Mud Hens (31-29, 65-69) kept Indianapolis (34-26, 65-70) hitless until the eighth inning. Nick Cimillo sent Indianapolis’ first and only knock of the game behind the centerfield wall off Ty Madden (W, 3-0), tying the game with his solo shot, 1-1. It was his third home run in as many games, having launched two long balls in Tuesday’s contest.
Both starters turned in scoreless outings, with Antwone Kelly leaving the mound after 4.2 innings and Jackson Wolf finishing his day after 6.0 frames. Toledo’s Jace Jung drove in the game’s first run in the sixth inning with an RBI single, his second knock of a three-hit day for the infielder. Jung scored the go-ahead run from third base in the bottom of the eighth inning, touching home as Andrew Navigato grounded into a bases-loaded force out allowed by Beau Burrows (L, 5-4). Tanner Rainey (S, 3) collected the last two outs of the ballgame to earn the save.
The Indians look to snap their six-game losing streak, tied for their longest of the year, with a win tomorrow at 7:05 PM ET. Indianapolis’ LHP Connor Wietgrefe (4-5, 3.76) will take on Toledo’s RHP Dylan File (6-9, 5.45).
