
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Indianapolis Indians rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, but fell to the Nashville Sounds, 6-4, on Sunday night at First Horizon Park. The clubs split the six-game series at three apiece.
With the Indians (28-17, 59-61) trailing 4-2 in the seventh inning, Enmanuel Valdez cut the deficit to one with an RBI single and Jhostynxon Garcia came through with a two-out base hit to knot the contest. Luis Matos later hit a two-run triple for Nashville (22-23, 65-55) in the eighth inning to put the game away.
Johnathan Rodríguez opened the scoring for Indy with a two-out, two-run single in the third frame. Bo Naylor answered with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half and Matos launched a two-run homer for a 3-2 Sounds lead. Naylor later carried momentum with a solo shot in the fifth, his 10th homer on the season. After Indy tied the game in the seventh, Matos again delivered a go-ahead hit.
Connor Wietgrefe tossed 6.0 innings with four runs (3er) and six strikeouts. Brandon Eisert (L, 1-2) delivered a clean seventh and returned for the eighth. He allowed a single but struck out the next two batters as he gave way to Landon Tomkins from the bullpen. Tomkins walked Brock Wilken and the next at-bat was Matos’ triple.
Will Childers (W, 2-2) emerged victorious from the Sounds’ bullpen game and Jared Koenig (S, 1) shut down Indy in the ninth.
Indianapolis has an off day on Monday before beginning a six-game home series vs. the Louisville Bats on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 6:35 PM ET. Indy has not yet named a starting pitcher while RHP Jose Acuna (1-4, 7.36) will throw for the Bats in the opener.
