INDIANAPOLIS – The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that shortstop Konnor Griffin will have his major league rehab assignment transferred from Double-A Altoona to the Indianapolis Indians as the team is set to begin a six-game road series at the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6:35 PM ET. Griffin would become the eighth MLB rehabber assigned to Indy this season following right-handed pitcher Jared Jones, catcher Joey Bart, right-handed pitcher Wilber Dotel, catcher/first baseman Endy Rodríguez, left-handed pitcher Evan Sisk, right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski and outfielder Oneil Cruz.
Griffin, 20, was placed on the 10-day injured list by Pittsburgh on July 7 (retroactive to July 6) with a left ring finger sagittal band injury. He was later transferred to the 60-day injured list on July 11 and appeared in one rehab contest with Altoona on Aug. 30.
Griffin began the season with Indy and appeared in five games, reaching base safely multiple times in each of those contests.
He had his contract selected by Pittsburgh on April 3 and made his MLB debut that day vs. Baltimore at PNC Park. He became the first teenager (19) to debut since Juan Soto (Washington, March 28) and Elvis Luciano (Toronto, March 31) in 2019. On April 8, the club inked Griffin to a nine-year, $140 million contract extension. The former No. 1 overall prospect burst onto the scene with the Pirates, hitting .276 (62-for-225) with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 25 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a .736 OPS across 59 games with the club this season.
The young phenom climbed the ranks in 2025 at Single-A Bradenton (50 games), High-A Greensboro (51) and Altoona (21) in 122 games. Across the three levels combined, he hit .333 (161-for-484) with 23 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, 65 stolen bases and a .942 OPS. Following the season, Griffin was named Pittsburgh’s Young Bucs Honus Wagner Player of the Year, Bill Mazeroski Defender of the Year and a MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove recipient.
Griffin was selected by Pittsburgh as the ninth overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft from Jackson (Miss.) Preparatory School.
