
Jonathon Long recorded a five-hit game as the Iowa Cubs (7-8, 37-50) defeated the St. Paul Saints (7-7, 49-39) 21-7 on Thursday evening at Principal Park.
The teams traded runs in the first inning with Owen Miller getting Iowa on the board courtesy of a sacrifice fly. The Saints retook the lead with one run in the second inning.
The I-Cubs pieced together a five-run two-out rally in the fourth inning that featured six consecutive hits. Christian Bethancourt and Scott Kingery hit back-to-back home runs to start the rally. Jonathon Long drove in a run on an RBI single and Miller and Moises Ballesteros had back to back RBI doubles as Iowa jumped in front 7-2.
After St. Paul got one run back in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth inning to cut the Iowa lead to two runs, the I-Cubs rallied once again. Long hit a solo home run, James Triantos hit an RBI single and Bethancourt doubled home a run to push the Iowa lead back out to five runs.
The Saints scored one run in the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but hit into a double play to keep the Iowa lead at 4. After Long recorded his fifth hit of the game, B.J. Murray drove in two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the I-Cubs a 12-6 lead.
From there, the I-Cubs put together a nine-run eighth inning to blow the game wide open. Bethancourt hit his second home run of the game, a three run blast to give him five RBI for the night.
Jonathan Long recorded the first five-hit game by an Iowa Cub since Owen Cassie on July 22, 2025. The I-Cubs set new single game season highs in runs scored (21) and hits (24).
