LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Jace Beck tossed a no-hitter on Sunday in the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s 4-0 rain-shortened, five-inning victory over the Gwinnett Stripers from Gwinnett Field.
The only base runner Beck (1-1) yielded came on an error to begin the bottom of the first before he retired the next 15 batters, five via strikeout. The contest was halted with Jacksonville (57-55, 15-23) leading 4-0 following the fifth inning due to inclement weather.
Beck’s no-hitter was the second of the season for Jacksonville, following Braxton Garrett’s 8.0-inning no-hitter in a 2-0 loss on April 21, also at Gwinnett. Beck was one of two players traded by the Chicago Cubs for Garrett on August 3 to the Marlins. The no-hitter is also the 15th in Jacksonville history (1970-present) and the first rain-shortened no-no since Elih Villanueva’s 5.0-inning no-hitter on August 15, 2010 against Carolina.
Deyvison De Los Santos got the scoring started for Jacksonville (57-55, 15-23) with a two-out solo shot in the first off Gwinnett (58-55, 20-19) starter Cedric De Grandpre (0-1).
The Jumbo Shrimp added to their lead in the third. Jonathon Long walked with two outs before De Los Santos single. Kemp Alderman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brayden Taylor, who walked to force in the game’s second run.
Maximo Acosta drilled a long home run in the fourth to make it 3-0.
Long and De Los Santos jumpstarted the fifth with singles. An Alderman fielder’s choice put runners on the corners before an Alderman steal coupled with an error brought in Long to widen the gap to 4-0.
After Monday’s off day, Jacksonville returns to VyStar Ballpark to start a six-game series against the Syracuse Mets with Tuesday’s 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MLB.tv, Bally Live, ESPN 690AM and www.ESPN690.com.
