JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp infielder Jared Serna became the 13th Jacksonville alumnus in 2026 to make his major league debut when he did so on Tuesday for the Miami Marlins against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
Serna entered the game as a pinch hitter for Otto Lopez in the top of the eighth inning. He stayed in the game at second and made one infield assist.
A native of Guaymas, Mexico Serna began 2026 with the Jumbo Shrimp, playing in 91 games, slashing .221/.303/.378/.681. At the time of his promotion, Serna was tied for seventh on the team in both home runs (12) and RBIs (48) and tied for eighth in stolen bases (14).
Serna was originally signed by the New York Yankees as an international free agent in July 2019. After not playing in 2020, he debuted in the Yankees organization in 2021 for the DSL Yankees 1. He spent 2022, 2023 and part of 2024 playing with the Tampa Tarpons (Low-A, Yankees) and Hudson Valley Renegades (High-A, Yankees). After playing in 89 games with the Hudson Valley Renegades in 2024, Serna was traded to the Miami Marlins along with Agustín Ramírez and Abraham Ramirez in exchange for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
After playing in 39 games with Double-A Pensacola and six games with Jacksonville in 2024, Serna played most of the 2025 campaign with the Blue Wahoos. He slashed .223/.305/.277/.582 with Pensacola, clubbing three homers and driving in 28 RBIs. He played in 10 regular season games with Jacksonville before helping the Jumbo Shrimp win their first International League Championship since 1968 and their first-ever Triple-A National Championship. During the 2025 postseason, the infielder went 5-for-11 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Serna is the 13th Jacksonville alumnus to debut in the major leagues during the 2026 season, following infielder Deyvison De Los Santos (March 29, Marlins) and right-handers Matt Pushard (March 29, St. Louis Cardinals) and Josh Ekness (May 3, Marlins), catcher Joe Mack (May 4, Marlins), right-hander William Kempner (May 5, Marlins) and left-handers Dax Fulton (May 6, Marlins) and Robby Snelling (May 8, Marlins), right-handers Josh White (May 31, Marlins), Zach McCambley (June 3, Cincinnati Reds), Woo-Suk Go (July 9, Minnesota Twins), left-hander Jefry Yan (August 5, New York Mets) and right-hander Jack Ralston (August 23, Marlins). A total of 1,069 players have played both for Jacksonville and in the major leagues. The history of Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.
