LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – A four-run Stripers second pushed Gwinnett to a 5-2 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in Tuesday’s series opener from Gwinnett Field.
Carlos Santana led off a scoreless second with a single against Jumbo Shrimp (54-53, 12-21) starter Brandon White (3-5). After a pair of outs, José Azócar singled before a Sandy León base hit brought home Santana for the game’s first run. Cal Conley followed with an RBI double before Patrick Clohisy’s two-run single made it 4-0 in favor of the Stripers (56-53, 18-16).
The score remained that way until the sixth. Maximo Acosta led off with a single against Gwinnett starter AJ Smith-Shawver (2-0). He stole second base, and after a line out, Jonathon Long and Graham Pauley each walked to load the bases. Acosta scored on a wild pitch before Kemp Alderman’s RBI ground out cut the deficit to 4-2.
The game’s final run scored in the eighth. Kyle Farmer led off with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a pair of outs, he scored on a León RBI single to make it 5-2.
Jacksonville and Gwinnett meet again in Wednesday’s 6:35 p.m. first pitch. LHP Patrick Monteverde (2-2, 6.19 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against Stripers LHP Herick Hernandez (1-0, 7.24 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 690 AM and www.ESPN690.com.
