JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite collecting eight hits, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Gwinnett Stripers 10-2 Thursday night at VyStar Ballpark.
Gwinnett (73-68, 35-32) took an early 3-0 lead in the first frame. Jim Jarvis led off the game with a triple and tallied the Stripers’ first run on a wild pitch. Lizandro Espinoza walked and stole second. After advancing to third on a flyball, he scored on the second wild pitch of the inning. Two batters later, David McCabe (4) crushed a solo homer, pushing the advantage to three.
The Stripers extended their lead in the second. José Azócar singled and with one out Chuckie Robinson was hit by a pitch. Azócar advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jarvis drew a walk to load the bases and Azócar scored on a wild pitch. Robinson and Jarvis moved up to second and third and Espinoza drove in both runners with a base hit for a 6-0 lead. In the ensuing at-bat, Rowdy Tellez clubbed another double plating Espinoza making the score 7-0.
Gwinnett added their eighth run in the third. Azócar led off with a single and stole second. Three batters later, Jarvis doubled home Azócar, extending the lead to eight.
The Stripers add one more in the sixth. Jarvis and Espinoza drew consecutive walks to start the inning. A ground ball pushed runners to second and third. McCabe drove in Jarvis with a sacrifice fly.
Gwinnett’s final run came in the top of the seventh. Azócar doubled and was pushed to third on a single from DeShawn Keirsey Jr. With runners on the corners, Jarvis hit a sac fly that plated Azócar which gave the Stripers a 10-0 advantage.
Jacksonville (70-70, 28-38) got on the board in the seventh. Brayden Taylor singled and advanced to third on a base hit from Logan Driscoll. Johnny Olmstead hit a sac fly plating Taylor, for the Jumbo Shrimp’s first run.
Taylor (4) continued his hot offensive night with a solo homer in the ninth inning, cutting the deficit to an eight-run game but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Jacksonville and Gwinnett continue their series with Friday’s 7:05 p.m. contest. RHP Karson Milbrandt (0-7, 8.67 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Jumbo Shrimp and the Stripers will counter with RHP Cedric De Grandpre (1-2, 4.09 ERA).
