JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Home runs from Deyvison De Los Santos, Matthew Etzel and Brayden Taylor propelled the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to a 6-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds Wednesday night at VyStar Ballpark.
Jacksonville (64-62, 22-30) jumped on top in the first inning. Cam Cannarella led off with a walk, and two batters later, De Los Santos (19) blasted a two-run homer.
Jacksonville continued the scoring in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Brayden Taylor (1) led off the inning with a solo homer. In the ensuing at-bat, Matthew Etzel doubled and stole third. Two batters later, Maximo Acosta plated Etzel for the Jumbo Shrimp’s fourth run.
The Jumbo Shrimp padded their lead in the fourth. Taylor doubled and Etzel (15) walloped a two-run homer, giving Jacksonville a 6-0 advantage.
Nashville (69-58, 26-26) tallied their first and only run in the fifth. Eric Brown Jr. walked and advanced to third on an infield single from Brandon Lockridge. With runners on first and third, Bo Naylor followed with a double, cutting the deficit to five.
Jacksonville got a great effort from their pitching staff with six hurlers combining for 12 strikeouts. Matt Pushard tossed three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Justin King (W, 3-0) struck out two over 1.1 innings. Wikelman Gonzálezstruck out three in 1.2 innings. Zach Pop, Jake Walkinshaw and Stephen Jones combined for five strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
Jacksonville and Nashville continue the series with Thursday’s 7:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Jace Beck (7-3, 3.36) will toe the rubber for Jacksonville and Nashville will counter with RHP Colman Crow (8-1, 3.31). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on Bally Live, MLB.tv, MiLB.tv, ESPN 690, and espn690.com.
