JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp split their doubleheader with the Gwinnett Stripers Tuesday night with a 1-0 win in game one and 3-1 loss in game two.
After trading zeroes in the first four frames, Jacksonville (70-68, 28-36) took the first and only lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Matthew Etzel walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Gwinnett (71-68, 33-32) starter Owen Murphy (5-8). In the ensuing at-bat, Logan Driscoll plated Etzel with a double for a 1-0 advantage.
The Jumbo Shrimp rode their pitching staff for seven shutout innings with a combined seven strikeouts. Jake Walkinshaw (W, 2-2) tossed two scoreless frames with one strikeout.
The Stripers opened the scoring in the top of the first. After a double play in the top of the first, Rowdy Tellez and David McCabe knocked consecutive singles. In the ensuing at-bat, Brett Wisely doubled home Tellez, giving Gwinnett a 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville evened the game in the second frame. With one out, Braden Taylor and Gage Miller drew walks. Following a strikeout, Brendan Jones walked to load the bases. Cam Cannarella reached on an infield single, scoring Taylor which evened the game at one.
Gwinnett rallied late in the sixth and never looked back. With two outs, José Azocar walked and went to third on a two-bagger from DaShawn Keirsey Jr. Chuckie Robinson singled home Azocar and Keirsey Jr, putting the Stripers in front, 3-1.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Stripers continue their six-game set with Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. contest. LHP Luis Palacios (3-1, 2.29 ERA) gets the ball for Jacksonville and Gwinnett will hand the ball to RHP Brett Sears (0-0, 1.32 ERA).
