NORFOLK, Va. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and slugged their way to an 8-4 win over the Norfolk Tides Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
The Jumbo Shrimp opened the scoring in the second when Jonathon Long walked, Brandon Compton singled and Juan Matheus walked to load the bases for Bennett Hostetler, who provided a sacrifice fly to plate Long. Hostetler would finish the night with five runs batted in, tying a career high.
A five-run fourth inning against Tides starter Juaron Watts-Brown (L, 1-2) broke the game open early for Jacksonville. Compton walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch that struck out Brayden Taylor, who reached first base as a result of the dropped third strike. A subsequent wild pitch pushed Taylor up to second. Matheus singled to bring home Compton. One batter later, Hostetler (8) crushed a three-run homer to left to open up a 5-0 lead. Cam Cannarella (2) capped the rally with a solo longball to left-center to make it 6-0.
Compton (1) contributed his first Triple-A home run, and his 34th of the season between three minor league levels, with one out in the top of the fifth to push the Jumbo Shrimp advantage to 7-0.
Jacksonville completed their offensive effort in the eighth when Long singled to begin the inning and walks from Taylor and Matheus loaded the bases for Hostetler, who was hit by a pitch to force in the Jumbo Shrimp’s eighth run.
Jacksonville starter Luis Palacios turned in four perfect frames with three strikeouts. Zach Brzykcy, Zach Pop (W, 3-4), Christian MacLeod and Holt Jones combined with Palacios to deliver 7.2 no-hit innings before Jones yielded a two-out, two-strike solo home run to Brandon Butterworth (4) in the eighth to bring the score to 8-1.
Norfolk further cut into the deficit in the ninth. Bryan Ramos began the frame with a single and was replaced at first base when Enrique Bradfield Jr. bounced into an infield forceout. Jud Fabian doubled to set up a second and third situation and bring up Jeremiah Jackson (2), whose three-run homer set the final margin at 8-4. Jones sealed the win by inducing a fly out and a pop out.
The series continues Thursday at 12:05 p.m. with Jacksonville right-hander Jace Beck (1-1, 4.13) starting on the mound opposite Norfolk righty Trace Bright (1-10, 7.29). Coverage begins at 11:50 a.m. on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
