JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 16-hit night set the tone for the Nashville Sounds in a 14-6 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Tuesday night at VyStar Ballpark.
The Sounds (69-57, 26-25) struck first in the second inning off Jacksonville (63-62, 21-30) starter Brandon White (L, 3-7) with a solo home run from Akil Baddoo (9) to take a 1-0 lead.
Nashville rallied in the third inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six times. A trio of singles from Ethan Murray, Eric Brown Jr. and Brandon Lockridge began the inning, with Lockridge’s knock driving in Murray. Bo Naylor sent a sacrifice fly to right to plate Brown Jr. Lockridge then scored on a Luke Adams triple. Baddoo brought in Adams with a double, and Brock Wilken plated Baddoo on a base hit. Tyler Black capped the inning with a triple to score Wilken and open up a 7-0 advantage, which proved to be plenty for Nashville starter Colton Gordon (W, 1-3), who posted five scoreless frames with four strikeouts.
The Sounds added on in the fifth after Baddoo led off with a walk and scored from first on a Black double to make it 8-0.
A Nashville five-spot followed in the sixth inning. Lockridge led off with a walk, and back-to-back singles from Naylor and Adams loaded the bases for Blake Burke, who slashed a two-run double to allow the Sounds to ring the double-digit bell. A Baddoo sacrifice fly plated Adams, and Burke scored on a two-run home run from Wilken (14) to set the score at 13-0.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Black (7) capped off the offensive onslaught at 14-0 with a solo home run to right.
Jacksonville chipped away in the home half of the eighth against the Sounds bullpen. Maximo Acosta sent a fly ball to deep right-center that was dropped, allowing him to reach third base to begin the inning. He then scored on a Cam Cannarella double. Jonathon Long plated Cannarella with a single. A Logan Driscoll single and Johnny Olmstead walk loaded the bases for Matthew Etzel (14) who crushed a grand slam to cut the deficit to 14-6.
The series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with Jacksonville southpaw Patrick Monteverde (3-2, 5.84) scheduled to start opposite Nashville right-hander Coleman Crew (8-1, 3.13). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on Bally Live, MLB.tv, MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
